Death Is Not Always the Winner
By David Landau
This novel tells a story that has lain dormant for half a century. It's a tale about Fidel Castro’s seizure of power in Cuba and the efforts of valiant fighters to overthrow his budding tyranny. The new group of Cuban rebels, independent and idealistic, are finally let down by United States officials who distrust people they can’t control. Culminating in the Bay of Pigs invasion and an attempt to assassinate Castro, this gripping narrative details the period so closely it almost restores a piece of lost history.
"It moves like a motion picture—great narrative and style."
—Iván Acosta, Cuban-American filmmaker
"From the first page, Landau's novel . . . hits the reader with emotion and interest."
—Altoona Mirror
"This book will remain an indispensable source for understanding the political developments on the island. . . . Highly recommended for bookstores and for public and college libraries."
—Críticas
"A work of undoubted historic value . . . Landau has pulled off a genuine tour de force: to insert the Quixotic epic of his central character into the larger picture of battles between Castro and the U.S."
—El Nuevo Herald (Miami)
"A work of art, a piece of literature. . . . This book could have, for years to come, the resonance once enjoyed by Arthur Koestler’s Darkness at Noon."
—Ricardo Bofill, founder of the Cuban human rights movement
David Landau has been a recognized expert in foreign policy matters since the 1972 release of his internationally acclaimed book, Kissinger: The Uses of Power, hailed twenty years later by The New Republic as “the best of the books” to be published about Kissinger. In the late 1980s, Landau began to see Cuba-U.S. relations from a Cuban point of view, inspiring the creation of literary works and eventually Pureplay Press, a publisher specializing in works about Cuba’s history and culture. David Landau lives in Los Angeles with his wife Kaori.
